The National Identity Card (NID) is a government-issued photo ID, similar to the Bangladeshi Driver’s License. It is a biometric, microchip-embedded and intelligent identity card. So far, Smart Cards have been distributed across all 64 districts but they are not yet available for everyone in all 491 Upazilas.

What is a NID Card?

The NID Card is a National Identity Card issued by the Government of Bangladesh. It serves as a biometric, microchip-embedded smart card, ensuring secure and intelligent identification for citizens.

In 2025, several neighborhoods across Bangladesh will receive their NID Smart Cards. The distribution schedule for all regions has been announced and smart cards are expected to be distributed early in the year.

Bangladesh National ID Card Registration Online

As of March 2 this year, a total of 11 crore 21 lakh 69 thousand 818 citizens have been registered in the NID database server. Among them, the number of voters is 10 crore 98 lakh 18 thousand 817, while the remaining 23 lakh 51 thousand 1 citizens are yet to be included in the voter list.

According to the Election Commission (EC), after completing the distribution of smart cards in Dhaka and Kurigram, the process will gradually expand across the entire country. The distribution was planned to continue until December 2017.

How to Get a Smart National ID Card by SMS

To check the status or get updates about your Smart National ID Card, follow these steps:

  1. Open your phone’s messaging app.
  2. Type SC (space) NID (space) Your 17-Digit NID Number.
  3. Send the SMS to 105.

Example:

If your NID is 19886578345654840, type:
SC NID 19886578345654840
and send it to 105.

Note:

  • If your NID contains only 13 digits, you need to add your birth year at the beginning of the NID number.
  • Example: If your 13-digit NID is 1234567871012 add your birth year (e.g., 1988) to make it a 17-digit number:
    SC NID 19881234567871012

Smart Card Distribution Information 2025

The 17-Digit National ID format provides more detailed information about the holder’s identity. Here’s how the 17-digit NID is structured:

  1. First 4 Digits: Birth Year
  2. Next 2 Digits: District Code
  3. Next 1 Digit: RMO Code (Rural/Municipality/Other Code)
  4. Next 2 Digits: Upazila Code
  5. Next 2 Digits: Union/Country Code
  6. Last 6 Digits: Unique Private Number

Old 13-Digit National ID Card

The older 13-Digit NID format lacked the birth year at the beginning. Its structure was as follows:

  1. First 2 Digits: District Code
  2. Next 1 Digit: RMO Code
  3. Next 2 Digits: Upazila Code
  4. Next 2 Digits: Union/Country Code
  5. Last 6 Digits: Unique Private Number
